In 2005 I started my journey in radio. Interning in Radio/being hired on and meeting amazing Dj's really amplified my passion for mixing. They were all men, So that's when I knew I wanted to be the top female (turntable) DJ in Phoenix. I looked up to so many of these Dj's. "Dj Myth, DJ Thaicoon, DJ M2 and DJ Mattafact. They all spun different genres in different ways and I wanted to learn everything they knew. (old school, spanish, hip-hop, electro reggae")
After taking all these years to advance in the craft of DJing I have been DJing for 8years now!
Djanemag: What’s the most enjoyable part of your job?
Juma Martinez: The most enjoyable part of my job is seeing how people react to the way I spin, non stop dancing on the dance floors, the cheering when I feel my crowd and put the exact song they were wanting to groove to! Receiving compliments during or after my gigs really makes me feel I am achieving what it is I wanted to do in this industry. When someone comes up and says "Juma can I have your card"?! I know I'm doing exactly what I hoped to do. Over the years I have gained so much in this career, friends, knowledge, and spinning for events I never thought I could! Being apart of such large community events is very honoring when I know its for a great cause. Music brings such positive vibes to my life! I can honestly say I LOVE MY JOB!
Djanemag: What’s the most difficult thing about your job?
Juma Martinez: The most difficult part about my job is missing out on family events, birthday parties because those are usually on the days that I spin (weekends) and or sleep. I really don't sleep because I don't want to miss anything in my children's lives or life in general. but over the years juggling my career in radio, djing and having a family has become second nature. It is just who I am and I've learned to enjoy every hour in my days differently.
Djanemag: Do you have any exclusive news for readers at this moment you wanna share?
Juma Martinez: I will be starring on a television show "UMR" URBAN MUSIC REPORT LIVE as the new House dj for the series. Many events coming soon!!
