THE BIG QUESTIONS:DJ MISS NINE
DJ MISS NINE answered to some questions for Mixmag Asia!
Where are you answering these questions from?
Up in the sky, on a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Jakarta.
What’s the most unique hotel you’ve ever stayed in?
The Watermelon Hotel in Sao Paulo called Unique Hotel with the sky lounge restaurant on top. Yummy sushi and paper thin pizzas. The hotel is very unique from the outside. From the gym you can slide into the swimming pool.
Another cool spot is in Malaysia – Pangkor Laut. A small island with water villas. Back to nature.
What was the worst job you had before you were a successful touring artist?
Packing handcrafted christmas tree balls made with glass into boxes for a couple of weeks during school holidays so I was able to buy myself a mountain bike.
What’s your favorite band/music right now outside of the dance music industry?
Taylor Swift. She is inspiring.
Do you have any pre-gig rituals or superstitions?
Believe it or not I usually have a short power nap before a show. Sometimes I enjoy the silence for a while or just chill for a little bit the artist/changing room. The calm before the storm. In any case I’m at the venue at least 30 minutes before my set to check the vibe. The most important ritual.
What’s your lamest claim to fame besides DJing?
Being a model. I know it’s a stereotype trap but I actually started my career with that and still do some jobs if I find some time.
What’s the strangest cultural thing a promoter has ever taken you to do?
When I did an interview for a TV show in Australia they made me eat Marmite in front of the rolling camera. Ughh yukkii.
What is one place that a visit home isn’t complete without?
My mom’s kitchen. She makes the best cake and cookie and Thueringen Kloesse (traditional German dish made with potatoes).
What are your hobbies besides DJing?
Cooking, designing, creative activities, tennis, eating, cycling, fast cars, yoga, discovering amazing places in this world, spending time with friends and family…
The biggest regret or missed opportunity with respect to your music career?
I have no regrets. Things happen for a reason. The right moment will always come. I always preferred to have a consistent rise in my career than doing it for a short term. Music is my passion and I love what I do. Over the years you build-up the right connections and collaborations with amazing people in the industry.
Describe your dancing style?
When I’m on the dance floor you can describe my dance style as a floating spinning shuffle step dance with wings out. Behind the DJ booth it’s a twister bounce.
Most bizarre situation you’ve ever found yourself in?
In the beginning of my career when I watched video of a big festival and found myself entertaining a huge crowd. It was kind of unreal to me at that time.
What is the most embarrassing thing you have ever done while performing?
Slipping away behind the DJ booth because of all the booze on the floor. It could have been a scene out of a hangover movie. Pushing the wrong button happen only once.
What’s the best interview question you’ve ever been asked (besides this one)?
What three items would you bring on a desert island? Still haven’t made my choice.
The strangest thing you’ve ever eaten while on tour?
Iguana and crocodile, and they both taste almost the same. A bit like chicken.
If you could spend a day with anyone on the planet, who would it be?
With Jasmine Thompson in my music studio in Amsterdam.
What do you like to spend your money on?
I have to admit I love Italian shoes. And sometimes you have to reward yourself. I love to cook and eat. Due to my heavy travel schedule, I eat a lot of fresh food to stay fit.
Go-to hangover food?
A fresh coconut, french fries with seasoning, parmesan cheese and ketchup. If this isn’t available I turn into a meat eater.
Last night in Kuala Lumpur when I finished playing the opening for the new Zouk Club, Firebeatz, Dubvision and some friends all came a long with me to China town we ate packchoy, noodles, fried octopus, chicken and clams. It was hilarious and yummy.
What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever seen happening from the DJ booth?
I saw one guy the other day at a festival still standing in front of the DJ booth having his eyes closed for a couple of minutes while the whole crowd around him was freaking out. Was a bit worried that I really killed someone with my music.
Weapon of choice?
Music and love.
