DJANEMAG: When did you start DJing - and what or who were your early passions and influences?
ROYAL: I started djing 2 years ago. My early passion was making mashups, I spent most afternoons working on music whether it was mashups, edits or mixes - all of it was practice and learning. My early influences were artists like Skrillex, What So Not, Alison Wonderland.
DJANEMAG: What do you personally consider to be the incisive moments in your artistic career?
ROYAL: About 12 months ago I became a solo artist. I truly believe that allowed me to develop and grow. I was able to form ROYAL into the pathway I wanted her to go, I feel as though I am always doing self discovery but I am content with where I am right now in my career. Since becoming solo I’ve played two music festivals and have more in the works and that was a goal I always wanted to hit.
DJANEMAG: What are currently your main challenges as a female DJ? What is it about DJing that makes it interesting for you?
ROYAL: I think one of the biggest challenge as a female DJ is building respect around my show and music. There are a lot of female DJs that are in the “model” category, that’s fine, there is nothing wrong with that, but I knew from the minute I started in this industry that I wanted to be respected for my music. When I initially started as a DJ I knew nothing about production and I have taken the time to do weekly lessons, sit in on production sessions with other producers and be involved in weekly studio sessions with musicians to learn all I can with production. I definitely have so much more to learn but I know I am on the right path to win the battle of musical support. One of the biggest things I love about DJing is the travel. I am so grateful for the ability to create new experiences, in new surroundings.
DJANEMAG: What do you usually start with when preparing for a set?
ROYAL: I start with making new mashups, I like most sets to be different for my regular followers. Before I leave the house without fail I check my USBs in my studio to ensure they are ready and working! It’s one of my biggest fears to get to a gig and discover my USBs didn’t sync properly!
DJANEMAG: What makes you decide to play a particular record during one of your sets? Is there a criteria other than pure subjectivity, for selecting what to play at a gig?
ROYAL: There is no real selection process for me. I play what I like to hear and hope that others will appreciate as well. I will tailor my set to time slots if I am opening for an artist, I will respect them and play lighter music and of course none of their tracks! If I am headlining, I will make a playlist of tracks I currently vibe as well as recently made mashups and just go with it.
DJANEMAG: When there's more music than one can possibly take in, it is becoming increasingly hard to know what constitutes an original and a remake anymore. What's your opinion on the importance of roots, traditions, respecting originals and sources?
ROYAL: I don’t feel it is hard to determine what is an original and what is a remake. If you are buying your music from reputable sites, it clearly states whether it is a remake. I also believe if you are heavily into the music industry you also know if it is an original or remake from simply being active in the industry via social media, blogs and music charting sites. I am an Aria Charts DJ so every week I submit my top 20 club charts, because of this I am thankfully very up to date with current Australian music including originals, remakes and remixes. I feel as though a lot of respect will remain for original work because those tracks and their creativity, inspire others to express their creativity even if that is in the form of a remake.
DJANEMAG: What makes a strong transition from one track to the next from your point of view and how do you see the relative importance of establishing a flow versus creating tension through suspenseful breaks in continuity?
ROYAL: In my sets I have a lot of well known sing alongs with very heavy drops. I feel it is important to have songs that anyone in the audience can relate to and belt out at the top of their lungs with their crew. I do create tension through suspenseful build ups before a filthy drop but I also like to go from drop to drop so there is periods in my set that don’t have a down time. I feel this is important to keep flow rather than constantly bringing the audience up and down emotionally.
DJANEMAG: Please recommend two DJs to our readers you feel deserve their attention.
ROYAL: CRVKS - He is a DJ from Mooloolaba in QLD, and is very underrated. I feel like there will be big things happening from him!
Truman - A Sydney DJ who has been in the industry much longer than me but is producing some ridiculous tracks! He needs to be worldwide.
DJANEMAG: Tell 3 unknown facts about ROYAL!
ROYAL: 1. I am also a zookeeper and spend my days playing a role in animal and environment conservation.
2. I competed in the World Championships for skating.
3. I have a Dalmatian named Bailey who is my favourite thing in the entire world.
