NEW DOCUMENTARY 'Underplayed' explores sexism in dance music
"Yet, in 2019, only 5 of the world's top 100 DJs were women." This is one of the main reasons for the existence of DJANEMAG magazine!
A new documentary film examining sexism in the dance music industry is getting screened at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September.
The film is directed by Stacey Lee and filmed last summer during festival season and will screen at OLG Play Stage at Ontario Place on Saturday, September 19, followed by a set from REZZ.
Underplayed examines the lack opportunities for women in electronic music and tries to understand why women don’t get the recognition that men receive.
The film includes interviews with Alison Wonderland, Anna Lunoe, Heba Kadry, Nervo, Sherelle, REZZ, TOKiMONSTA among others. It will also explore their insights into how women can champion change in a historically male-dominated industry.
"So many people doubted me," said REZZ. "Oh, you guys just boost her up because she's a girl."
"I don't like to talk about it a lot, but there is definitely sexism in the music industry," Alison Wonderland states in the clip.
