Iconic New Zealand DJ Andyheartthrob Dies at 33 After Inspiring Legacy
Collaborators celebrated the Aotearoa artist behind underground collectives Dynasty and DJs Anonymous, praising her as a "ray of sunshine" who illuminated the local music scene
Andrea Orani, widely known by her stage name Andyheartthrob, has passed away at the age of 33 following a battle with stage-four metastatic cancer. Her manager, Jaimee-Lee Tredray, confirmed the heartbreaking news this week.
Andrea was diagnosed with metastatic bowel cancer in September 2023. The aggressive nature of the disease saw it spread rapidly to her liver, lymph nodes, and lungs. Despite the grim prognosis, Andrea demonstrated unwavering resilience, sharing her journey with her fans and loved ones online. A fundraiser launched in her name sought to raise up to $263,000 (NZD) to cover her treatment costs, which included chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and alternative therapies, as well as care for her young daughter, Ruuru.

Andrea's contributions to the underground music scene in Aotearoa (New Zealand) left an indelible mark. As a founder of the collectives Dynasty and DJs Anonymous, she became a beacon of support for emerging local artists, fostering connection and creativity. Dynasty, in particular, gained prominence for bringing international acts like Jersey club innovator UNiiQU3 to Auckland for her New Zealand debut in 2022.
Known as the “ultimate hype queen” by those close to her, Andrea was celebrated for her ability to inspire others to pursue their dreams. “Andy created spaces where connection and creativity thrived,” Tredray shared. “She embodied the DIY ethos: start something, build a village of like-minded souls, and uplift everyone along the way.”
One of Andrea’s final performances, a Boiler Room set recorded in May 2024 in Rarotonga (Cook Islands), showcased her passion for traditional and indigenous sounds. Performing alongside local talents such as Gat and Giddy, Andrea explored the rich musical heritage of the Cook Islands’ 15 islands.
Andrea’s impact reached beyond her performances. Friends and collaborators described her as a "ray of sunshine," bringing warmth and positivity to the underground music scene. Through her work with After Ours Studio and her collectives, she fostered a vibrant and inclusive community that thrived on collaboration and mutual support.
Andrea is survived by her parents, two sisters, countless friends and collaborators, and her daughter, Ruuru. As the music world mourns the loss of such a bright and talented soul, her legacy continues to inspire.
