BREAKING: Massive Fire Tears Through Tomorrowland’s Main Stage Just Days Before Festival

Fire erupts during pyrotechnic tests at Tomorrowland’s main stage, prompting evacuation and raising uncertainty just 48 hours before gates open

Boom, Belgium — July 16, 2025 — Just 48 hours before gates were set to open, a massive fire broke out on the Tomorrowland main stage, engulfing much of the festival’s centerpiece in flames and casting uncertainty over one of the most anticipated weekends in the global electronic music calendar.

Fire Breaks Out During Pyrotechnic Testing

According to local reports, the fire started around 6 p.m. during final pyrotechnic tests. The flames quickly spread across the intricate stage setup, part of this year’s theme “World of Orbyz,” consuming wood panels, LED façades, fireworks rigging, and mechanical structures. Over 50 firefighters from Boom and Antwerp were dispatched and managed to contain the blaze within a few hours. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Eyewitnesses described loud explosions moments before the fire erupted, though the exact cause remains under investigation.

No Injuries, But Extensive Damage

More than 1,000 crew members were working on site during the final preparations. All were safely evacuated. Visuals circulated on social media show the main stage severely damaged—its skeletal frame blackened and much of the structure collapsed. Roughly 75% of the stage was reportedly destroyed.

Authorities advised nearby residents to keep windows closed due to smoke, though no toxic materials were detected.

Charlotte de Witte Responds: “This is Heartbreaking”

Charlotte de Witte Responds: “This is Heartbreaking”

Among those most affected by the incident is Belgian techno star Charlotte de Witte, who was scheduled to make Tomorrowland history by both opening and closing the Main Stage on Saturday, July 19.

In a statement posted shortly after the fire, she said:

“This is heartbreaking… Sending love to everyone affected during what should’ve been a magical moment.”

Charlotte’s appearance was especially symbolic—marking the first time an artist was slated to play two full sets on the Main Stage in a single day. In 2022, she made history as the first female techno act to close the stage, and this year she was set to return to that historic role.

Organizers Confirm: “The Festival Will Go On”

During a press conference held Wednesday night, Tomorrowland spokesperson Debby Wilmsen addressed the media with a calm but resolute message:

“We’re moving forward with preparations for Tomorrowland — the festival is happening. There’s a lot of fake news circulating right now, but we are expecting 38,000 festivalgoers tomorrow at DreamVille, our camping site. We’re looking forward to welcoming them warmly, just as the mayor is.

We’ll keep the spirit of The Gathering alive, and all activities planned for Brussels will continue. Those arriving tonight at hotels in the city will also enjoy the full program — including Invited in Jaarbeurs and all scheduled events at the Grand Place.

We’ll take it day by day. We are staying positive, and we’re committed to making this a beautiful edition.

It may be without a Main Stage, but hopefully we can create something else. For now, I can’t say more.”

What Comes Next?

Organizers have not announced plans to rebuild the Main Stage in time for the first weekend but have emphasized that the rest of the festival infrastructure remains intact. Several other stages—Freedom, Atmosphere, CORE—are reportedly unaffected and operational.

The festival team is expected to announce a revised artist schedule and stage allocations in the coming hours.
