This Boeing 747 jumbo jet is now Burning Man’s biggest club

It goes without saying that a lot of crazy and impressive things go down in the Black Rock Desert during Burning Man (which is happening right now until September 5), but the ambition of the Big Imagination Foundation is going to be hard to beat in 2016.

While most Burners are content to roll up to the playa in an RV, this not-for-profit collective decided to bring a Boeing 747 jumbo jet. Big Imagination spent several months in California’s Mojave Desert converting the abandoned jet into “what might be the largest moving art experience ever created”.

Instead of flying hundreds of people across oceans, this 747 has been reimagined as an interactive art space, music venue, nightclub and meeting place. Part of plane’s upper deck has been converted into an open-air “rooftop” for sweeping views across the playa. The rig will move around Burning Man and is “open to all, no velvet ropes”.

Big Imagination hope to bring the entire project to Burning Man in 2017, but only part of the 747 made it to the playa this year. That said, it’s still a pretty massive part. One of the project’s biggest expenses is transporting the plane from the Mojave Desert to Burning Man (an 11-hour drive if you’re not pulling a plane), which explains why not all of it could make the trip this time.

The 747 Project deals with themes of looking towards the future, with participants encouraged to fill out “Emotional Baggage tags” before entering. You can check out the campaign crowd-funding video below, along with concept art that show what the completed project will look like at Burning Man 2017.

Keep your eyes peeled the Big Imagination Foundation’s facebook page to see what’s going down right now at Burning Man.
