Plavka – A legacy in electronic music and her new track 'Strap Me In' [Interview]
Plavka returns with Strap Me In – out now via Direct Action Records!
Plavka is an artist, producer, and DJ whose career took off in the UK rave scene. She is known as the vocalist of the legendary techno act Jam & Spoon, with whom she released global hits like Right in the Night, Find Me, and Angel. Before her collaboration with Jam & Spoon, Plavka had a hit with The Shamen called Hyperreal and also released critically acclaimed tracks with Rising High Collective. Her work has earned music awards and an MTV Europe Music Award nomination for Best Dance Act. Today, she continues to shape the electronic music scene by releasing groundbreaking tracks and DJing around the world.
Few voices in dance music are as instantly recognizable as Plavka’s. In the '90s, her collaboration with Jam & Spoon resulted in timeless anthems that helped define an era and continue to resonate on dance floors today. Before that, she had already made her mark in the electronic scene as a member of The Shamen, one of the pioneering acid house bands. With a career spanning decades, Plavka has never been confined by labels—her journey is marked by reinvention, authenticity, and a unique connection to music.
Now, she returns with Strap Me In, her latest single, fully immersing herself in music production and reaffirming her place in today’s electronic scene. Inspired by tech house and bass house, the track carries her signature sound, blending striking vocals with a hypnotic, dancefloor-ready atmosphere. But this is not just a new song—it’s a statement of her evolution as an artist, solidifying her transition from iconic vocalist to DJ and producer.

Can you tell us about your latest release, “Strap Me In”? What inspired this track?
I have been playing Bass House tracks in my DJ sets so I was inspired to see what I could come up with in that style.
How was the production process for this track? Did you collaborate with any specific producers or musicians?
I didn’t collaborate with anyone because I’m intent on having a signature sound with my production and vocals.
Is the release part of a larger project or album?
No, this isn't part of a larger project. I'm currently releasing singles.
Having been a key voice in dance music history, how do you see the evolution of the genre today?
Dance music has evolved in so many ways. The technology has changed, and the way people consume music is entirely different now. But at its core, dance music still connects people and creates a sense of unity, which is beautiful.
You’re known for your work with Jam & Spoon. What was that experience like, and how did it shape your career?
I was quite young when I first started working with Jam & Spoon. I was intimidated by Mark- ha ha! I never knew the first song I recorded with them was going to become a classic Dance track!
Do you still stay in touch with the Jam & Spoon duo? Are there any plans for future collaborations?
Unfortunately, Mark Spoon passed away, and that was a huge loss. But I still keep in touch with Jam El Mar.
What are your biggest musical influences?
I’ve been influenced by so many genres—Soul, House, Drum n Bass. Vocally, Sarah Vaughn is an inspiration.
"I didn’t collaborate with anyone because I’m intent on having a signature sound with my production and vocals."
Besides music, what are your other passions or influences in life and career?
I’ve been a Buddhist since 2006. That permeates every aspect of my life. I also love keeping fit and exploring fashion.
What’s next for you? Any upcoming projects or performances we should look out for?
I have more music coming up! I’m planning to release more singles throughout the year. I’m performing at a festival in Spain this June and have some other European dates.
